TERMS OF USE

Effective August 24, 2026

The agreement

These Terms of Use are an agreement between you and Lexwell (readlexwell.com). By creating an account or using the service you agree to them, and to our Privacy Policy, which explains what data we collect and how we handle it — including your child's.

Only adults may register. You must be at least 18 and the parent or legal guardian of each child you set up as a reader. We verify this at registration by asking for your date of birth, which is checked and immediately discarded — never stored. Children never create accounts and never agree to anything — you do, on their behalf, and you are responsible for their use of the service.

Early access. While Lexwell is in its early-access period, new account registration may be closed or limited, and accounts may be created by Lexwell for pilot families on request.

What Lexwell is

Lexwell is a reading-practice tool. Your child reads short, decodable books aloud while Max the Monkey — a software character — listens through the microphone and offers coaching. Books are personalised to your child's reading stage and interests, and your dashboard shows you their progress.

The content is AI-generated. Stories and illustrations are written by artificial intelligence (Anthropic's Claude models) and Max's voice is synthesized (ElevenLabs). Every book passes automated safety and decodability checks before your child sees it, and you can require approval of your child's chosen topics — but machine-generated content can still contain errors, oddities, or imperfect judgement. Tell us when you find one.

Lexwell is a practice tool, not a professional. It is not a diagnosis, not therapy, and not a substitute for the advice of a teacher, reading specialist, speech-language pathologist, or doctor. If you have concerns about your child's reading or development, please talk to a qualified professional.

Your account and your responsibilities

  • Keep your email, password, and four-digit grown-up passcode to yourself. Anything done through your account is treated as done by you.
  • The passcode is child-proofing, not a lock on the front door — supervise your child's use of the device as you normally would.
  • Give us accurate information, and tell us if something about your account is wrong.
  • You may set up readers only for children in your care.

Plans and billing

The free plan includes a fixed number of books to try the service. Paid plans bill monthly through Stripe, our payment processor, and include a monthly book allowance for one reader; additional readers are a per-seat add-on. You can change or cancel your plan at any time from the billing page, which opens Stripe's secure billing portal — cancellation stops future charges, and your plan stays available for the period you have already paid for. Except where the law requires otherwise, payments are non-refundable. If we change prices, we will tell you in advance and the new price applies from your next billing period.

Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • attempt to break, probe, or overload the service or access other families' data;
  • use the service to generate content for any purpose other than your child's reading practice, or attempt to work around its safety checks;
  • resell the service, or use it to build a competing dataset or product;
  • use the service in violation of any law.

We may suspend or close accounts that do these things.

Ownership and your family's books

Lexwell owns the service, the Max character, and everything about how it works. The personalised books generated for your child — text and illustrations — are yours to use for your family's personal, non-commercial reading practice: read them, re-read them, print one for the fridge. You may not sell them, republish them, or present them as your own or anyone else's work.

Disclaimers and limits on our liability

We work hard to make Lexwell reliable and good, and we provide it "as is": we cannot promise it will always be available, error-free, or right for your child, and we make no guarantee of any particular educational outcome. To the fullest extent the law allows, Lexwell is not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, and our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim arose. Nothing in these terms limits liability that the law does not allow us to limit.

Ending things

You can stop using Lexwell and delete your account at any time; deleting the account deletes your family's data as described in the Privacy Policy. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms, and we may retire the service itself — if we ever do, we will give paying subscribers reasonable notice and a refund of any unused period.

Governing law and forum

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Michigan and applicable United States federal law, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute arising out of or relating to these terms or the service will be brought exclusively in the state or federal courts located in Michigan, and you consent to the personal jurisdiction of those courts.

Changes to these terms

If we make material changes, we will update this page, change the effective date at the top, and email the address on your account before the changes take effect. Continuing to use Lexwell after that means you accept the new terms.
